ONSITE FACILITIES: Wok U Like
The Little Chef at Widford first opened between 1968 and 1972 and was located at a clever site. Not only was it situated next to a busy road which was prone to a lot of long distance traffic travelling to the east but it was also located right next to the densely populated town of Chelmsford, meaning that there was the chance of attracting locals to the restaurant as well as fellow travellers passing by. The restaurant, due to its small site and location, didn't recieve the bonus of filling station but it still happily ventured forward on its own.
Like a lot of other Little Chef restaurants opening in this era, Widford was housed inside of a building with the design of a converted house which suggests that Forte, along with many other roadside buildings, bought this roadside house in order to convert it into a Little Chef restaurant as part of their plans to expand the chain rapidly across the UK.
At the time of opening, the A414 was the A12, meaning that the main London-Great Yarmouth route went right past the Little Chef at Widford. However, a few years later, the A12 was re-routed around the east side of Chelmsford instead, resulting in a loss of prime trade around Widford.
The Little Chef soldiered on until 1994/95 and has since become a Chinese restaurant called Wok-U-Like.
