Address and Onsite InformationEdit
ADDRESS: Tot Hill, Haughley, Stowmarket, Suffolk, IP14 3PY
ONSITE FACILITIES: Travelodge
The Little Chef at Stowmarket first opened its doors in 1985/86 at a small service station on the westbound side of the A14 just outside of the small market town of Stowmarket. It was built alongside a small filling station and was later joined by a Travelodge hotel in the late 80s/early 90s.
Unlike a lot of Little Chef sites, which tend to be dual sided, the Little Chef at Stowmarket never received an eastbound partner. This could've been due to its close proximity to Beacon Hill, located only 6 miles away, which although was built at a junction (meaning that it was accessible to all traffic), it offered a lot more facilties and was known to be a popular site, especially for eastbound traffic
By 2007/08, the filling station on site ceased trading, leaving just the Travelodge and Little Chef to soldier on alone.
In 2008, the original A14 was bypassed by a new dual carriageway which became the new A14. The reason for this was because the original A14 was of poor quality, with a number of right turns across the carriageways and a suitably reduced 50mph speed limit. The new road took traffic away from the Little Chef. However, all was not lost as a new grade separated junction was built near to the restaurant and this junction displayed signage which made people aware that the Little Chef and Travelodge were both still trading, therefore they soldiered on happily. The old A14 was renamed Tot Hill
However in 2012, the Little Chef ceased trading as it was one of 67 sites decided by then owners, RCapital, which was deemed to be unsuccessful. The restaurant has since remained vacant. However, the Travelodge still soldiers on.
